Allan.Kauhane Wedding

I first met the adorable couple for a cake tasting and was excited to design there cake as they gave me liberty to design there cake.  There theme was laua'e fern and since it was a wedding I decided to give the cake a white pearl shine with the fern and keep it simple.  Delivery was in Hilo and we arrived there half an hour early which was nice because there family members were already at the reception helping out with setting up and decorating.  I was able to get in and take my time to assemble the cake, there family were so sweet.  I love it when I see family come together to help out in parties, especially weddings because thats how my family is.  In fact there was one sweet family friend, "Auntie Loke" who helped out at the end with the cake, she had some extra ribbons and butterfly pins that we used on the cake, as well as some laua'e fern that was placed on the table.  It came out perfect!  Congratulations to the newly weds!

Kaelan.Wendy Wedding

This past week I made a wedding cake for a couple who was wed at Kona Village Resort.  This was my first time venturing off to Kona Village Resort so besides the fact that I got lost, the cake was delivered right on time!  Note to self: real hibiscus should never be used on a cake as it is filled with pests and now days sprayed with pesticides.  So I had to substitute the hibiscus with silk flowers and it came out beautiful in the end. Congratulations to the newly weds, Kaelan and Wendy!

Small Orders Welcome!

Holidays are right around the corner and it seems I have been fully booked in mid November to beginning of January.  Although I have been getting requests from those of you who just want to place in small orders.  So I figured I will give back to my clients and work more to accept those smaller orders for the Holidays.  Yea, sounds crazy to be working overtime but I believe that celebrating any event is special and I enjoy contributing to this special occasion.  Striving to do my best, providing good customer service, and providing gourmet cakes and treats is what I enjoy doing.  So if you are one who was hoping that I will open up for small orders during the holidays... well what are you waiting for?  Place your orders before I am COMPLETELY booked!
So far I am open November 19th to December 8th and during the end of December.

Mom is 60

Catching up on some of my cakes... Here is a cake I did for a client who requested it for there mother who was turning 60.  This is Velvet Love with Cream Cheese filling covered with fondant.  Decorated with mini sugar flowers and some fresh orchids.  I had fun designing the cake and I think I enjoyed it the most because I wasn't exhausted like with some cakes I do (requires a lot of time).

Aqua White Hibiscus Cake

I made a 2 tier square cake covered in delicious fondant for a sweet couple from Canada.  Bottom tier was Mango with vanilla buttercream and the top tier was Velvet Love with vanilla buttercream.  The couple requested to have sugar hibiscus flowers cascading down there wedding cake.  I love the combination of colors for this wedding cake.  Keeping the traditional white by incorporating the hibiscus flowers and changing it up with some nice blue.  Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Phillips!

FYI Are Flowers Safe On A Cake?

I thought this would be some thing simple yet important to know when ordering a cake and fresh flowers to go with it.
Not all flowers are safe to place on a cake.  Speak with your florist about safety concerns.  Flowers that have been sprayed with pesticides should not be placed on your cake.  Some flowers are toxic for people and their juices may leach into your cake and possibly make people sick.  Your florist will know which flowers are toxic for people and should not be placed on a cake.

Scratch Cake vs. Cake Mix

For those who can’t remember what cakes made from scratch taste like, don’t worry; you’re in the majority. Today, most cakes are made from a mix. Cake mixes are a more consistent product. It’s certainly a safer way to bake especially if someone isn’t very experienced in the kitchen. Most of your larger food chains and bakeries like Sam’s, Costco, Walmart, etc. all use cake mixes. If their cakes are not shipped frozen, they order large sacks of cake mix to produce those beautiful cakes in the display cases. You can also purchase cake mix (Duncan Hines, Pillsbury, etc.) in local grocery stores. Although now a days it is easy and affordable to purchase cake mixes or already made "cake mix" cakes in stores, you should consider that there are preservatives and chemicals in these cake mixes.  Those who know what cake made from scratch taste like, definitely know that the two don't taste alike. A cake made from scratch usually tends to be filling and can be made with a variety of flavors and there is full control of quality of ingredients. We decided to make our cakes out of real ingredients such as local eggs, milk and sugar.  Sweets Galore does not make there cakes from cake mix but instead from scratch providing the best of ingredients available in Hawaii.

Hello Kitty

Here is a recent order I did for a little girl's birthday party.  It is a Hello Kitty carved out cake with about 65 cuppy cakes.  The cake is classic yellow with cream cheese filling and it serves about 15-20 depending on the sizes that are cut out to serve.  I enjoyed doing this order because everything came together with the cuppy cake design and cake.  The color of the yellow cake was perfect because it matched Hello Kitty's nose and the flowers on both the cuppy cakes and Hello Kitty's face matched.
The family were such nice people and I was happy that they liked the cake :-)
Happy Birthday to their sweet 6 yr old!

New Flavors!

Here it is. . . Coconut flavored cake!  Made with the best of ingredients, again I like to make my cakes from scratch and I am not a fan of hydrogenated oils/ trans fats and corn syrup.  So if you are some what like me this is a winner, well at least I think it is.  You would have to try it to actually judge it.  Also what a better way to present to your guest a cake, a coconut flavored cake in our beautiful island we call paradise!

ATTENTION all chocolate lovers!  Chocolate Ganache is now available for cake filling.  The meaning of the French word ganache is "cushion," as the cream seems to "cushion" both the flavor and texture of chocolate.

Like I always promised..  I will keep you all posted on any new flavors, fillings, etc.

Cuppy Cakes

So what is a Cuppy Cake?  It's a cupcake with just a cooler name from Sweets Galore and I myself before I started my business always called cupcakes, "Cuppy Cakes".  So it just stuck to me and tada ~ Cuppy Cakes.

Well I wanted to share a very useful tip on budgeting for an event and who doesn't like to save money?  Us locals love deals and I should know since I was born and raised in the islands.

If you are one who would like a cake and at the same time be able to budget then my cuppy cakes should do you good.  Cupcake towers are the new party trend along side with fondant designed cakes.  For me I like to present my cakes so that they are noticeable and have height so that it doesn't look like those sad full sheet cakes you get at a local grocery store.  Plus what's fun about a cake that you can only see the designs when hoovering over it, wouldn't you want some thing that you could see from a far. My point is cuppy cakes can do the same, they can look just as great as a fondant designed cake from a far and best yet when they are presented on a cupcake tower it looks so elegant.  Another thing that is so great with a cupcake tower is you don't have to be cake deprived meaning you can have a nicely designed mini cake on top of your tower.  This is great for wedding too because you can cut a slice out from the one cake that is on the very top. Did I mention the endless ways of designing a cupcake?  From the beautiful swirls, to a smooth fondant finish, mini sugar sculptures and dazzling sprinkles!  You can bling out your cuppy cakes in which ever way is desired.
Now let's talk about pricing, for a cupcake it could range anywhere from $1.25 (mostly prepackaged cake mix made from grocery stores) to $8.00 depending on flavors, designs, and definitely the bakery.  I actually seen a business in Hong Kong that charges $16 for a standard cupcake!  Isn't that bizarre?!  As for my cuppy cakes I charge a reasonable price for quality cuppy cakes and they can be customary designed the way you would like them! You can see a price list for cuppy cakes at www.sweetsgalorehawaii.com/pricing.  If you are thinking of adding a mini cake on the top of your cupcake stand the cost will start from $30.00 and will feed up to 10 servings through Sweets Galore.
Well I hope this helped some of you as far as cake budgeting!

Recent Updates

Hi all!
So I finished the Thomas the Train themed cake just the other day and wanted to post a picture up so you could see what it looked like.  This is a topsy turvy cake that did not need to be carved.  Most top bakers now days are staring to make this topsy turvy cake because it has a clean and elegant look to it.  I love this topsy turvy style!  Also, if most of you noticed I just updated my website and cleaned it up a bit.  Change is good.

Until my next blog.. EAT CAKE.

Thomas the Train

Today I started sculpting Thomas the train tank engine out of sugar paste and I will be using this for a child's birthday cake.  The whole cake theme is thomas the train.
Also, I do not know if any of you seen on my website's home page about sugar sculptures.  Sugar sculptures are great for party cake toppers and for keeping it as a souvenir.  In fact I still have my wedding cake topper made out of sugar stored away for keepsake!  Most places sell a sugar sculpture for about $80.00 for one!  Yea, isn't that crazy?  I remember when I was shopping around before I started baking and decorating cakes for just one figurine it cost $100.00.  wow.  Well Sweets Galore offers majority of figurines for just $25.00.  Sugar sculptures are getting very popular now days....

Storing Your Cake

Here is a common asked question, "How do I store my cake or cuppy cakes?"  Very simple!  If you ordered a fondant covered cake and would like to have your cake waiting for your guests just keep your cake in cool area at room temperature.  Do not put your cake in the refrigerator unless it is an iced cake!  Same thing goes with your cuppy cakes unless they just have icing on top and small fondant decorations.  Got left overs?  Put your left overs in the remaining cake box if provided from Sweets Galore or wrap it in saran wrap.  You can either store your cake in the refrigerator for at the most a week or some people actually freeze there cake and save it for later.  Simple!

The Orange Dream

Hi all!
I realized that blogging is a great idea to keep my customers in the loop and make you all feel like you are part of the wonderful, Sweets Galore.
So here it is... A new tasteful flavor called Orange Dream is now available for our cakes and cuppy cakes! This flavor has absolutely NO trans fats, hydrogenated oils and corn syrup! It is made with the best ingredients and no artificial flavoring. As of right now most of our cakes are made with whole ingredients and no trans fats, hydrogenated oils and corn syrup. But my goal is to get ALL of the cakes to be that way, as most of you should know from reading it in sweetsgalorehawaii.com in the "about" section.
I prefer that my cakes just taste even yummier when I know my cakes don't have all those additives like most other store bought cakes or bakeries.
Well that's all updates for now and keep in touch so you can see what other flavors we are going to launch and hmmm may be even order a cake for your special event!
